HEALTH AND WELLNESS: How Nature Aids in Reducing Cancer or Other Illness'

Nature does not cure cancer, but it can reduce cancer risk and support the body’s defenses through several well-studied biological and behavioral pathways. Think of nature as helping create an internal environment that is less favorable for cancer to develop or progress.

How nature aids in reducing cancer risk

1. Lowers chronic stress

  • Chronic stress increases cortisol and inflammatory chemicals.

  • These can damage DNA, weaken immune surveillance, and promote tumor growth.

  • Time in nature reliably lowers stress hormones and activates the parasympathetic (“rest-and-repair”) nervous system.

Why this matters: Cancer is more likely to arise and grow in chronically stressed bodies.

2. Reduces inflammation

  • Long-term inflammation is a major driver of many cancers (colon, breast, liver, pancreatic).

  • Nature exposure lowers inflammatory markers such as CRP and IL-6.

Why this matters: Less inflammation = fewer signals encouraging abnormal cell growth.

3. Strengthens immune surveillance

  • Nature exposure (especially forest environments) increases activity of natural killer (NK) cells.

  • NK cells identify and destroy abnormal or pre-cancerous cells before they form tumors.

Why this matters: A vigilant immune system can stop cancer early.

4. Improves sleep and circadian rhythm

  • Natural light regulates melatonin and circadian timing.

  • Disrupted circadian rhythms are linked to increased cancer risk.

  • Better sleep supports immune function and DNA repair.

5. Encourages physical activity

  • Green spaces make movement more likely and sustainable.

  • Physical activity reduces:

    • Obesity

    • Insulin resistance

    • Estrogen and insulin-like growth factors

  • All are linked to cancer development.

6. Reduces exposure to pollutants

  • Green areas often have cleaner air and lower noise pollution.

  • Air pollution contributes to oxidative stress and DNA damage, especially in lung cancer.

7. Improves mental health and health behaviors

  • Nature reduces depression and anxiety.

  • Better mental health supports healthier behaviors:

    • Less smoking and alcohol use

    • Better diet

    • Greater likelihood of screening and medical follow-up

8. Possible effects of plant compounds

  • Trees release phytoncides (natural airborne chemicals).

  • These may boost immune activity and reduce stress-related inflammation.

  • Research is ongoing, but early evidence is promising.

Important clarification

Nature:

  • Reduces risk factors

  • Supports immune and hormonal balance

  • Does not replace medical prevention or treatment

The strongest cancer prevention still includes:

  • Not smoking

  • Healthy diet

  • Regular physical activity

  • Cancer screening

  • Medical care

Nature helps reduce cancer risk by lowering stress and inflammation, strengthening immune surveillance, improving sleep and activity levels, and supporting healthier behaviors and environments.
