The Jabez Pond Boys (sometimes spelled Jabe Pond) are an acoustic folk and bluegrass musical group known for performing in the Adirondacks region of New York, particularly around Silver Bay and Lake George. The Jabez Pond Boys include: Terry Baker, Bruce Tamlyn, and Don Matthews (and originally Marty Meade).
Performances and Events
The Jabez Pond Boys was originally formed in 2009. They perform regional and local concert series, such as at the Silver Bay YMCA and Grace Memorial Chapel in Silver Bay, New York. They have provided live music for regional environmental and conservation events, including the Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) annual celebrations. Their repertoire heavily features traditional acoustic, folk, and bluegrass styles fitting the Adirondack community atmosphere.
The Jabez Pond Boys: At Silver Bay in 2009 Terry Baker got Marshall Meade and Bruce Tamlyn together to play bluegrass
music. They began by playing at Silver Bay variety shows. Terry then encouraged them to think about creating a bluegrass
service for Sunday worship at Silver Bay. Bruce, the Silver Bay Chaplin at the time, was quite skeptical of this idea at first. Terry
convinced him one Sunday to give it a try, and the congregation loved it: The Jabez Pond Boys were born. From 2010 through
this summer, The JPBs have held regular bluegrass Sundays both at Silver Bay and at Grace Memorial Chapel at Sabbath Day
Point (this year on July 5 th and 12 th , respectively).
Terry Baker (Banjo, Dobro, Vocals): Terry picked up the banjo during the folk song revival of the early sixties, but in 1997 he
went to his first bluegrass festival and really caught the bluegrass bug. His wife, Jill, gave him tuition to Banjo Camp and it all
built from there. About 12 years ago he bought his first dobro and fell in love with the expressive sound of this instrument. Back
in North Carolina he is a member of the Bluegrass Battleship which plays in and around the Chapel Hill area.
Bruce Tamlyn (Guitar, Vocals): One day as a 10-year-old, Bruce heard some older kids playing guitars and thought that the
sound was so beautiful that he wanted to learn to play. Soon after his parents bought him a used youth guitar. Using a chord
book, he began to learn simple songs. In junior high he and a few friends formed a rock band with electric guitars, and this
continued through high school. In college he joined three others to form a folk group that would play at the weekly folk mass at
the college and at other events. After college, some years passed where he played on his own, until the JPB formation.
Marshall Meade (Violin, Mandolin, Vocals): Marshall is a life-long musician and educator. He is a graduate of the Eastman
School of Music and has been a member of the Silver Bay String Quartet for many years. He is retired from teaching strings in
the Wilton Connecticut Public Schools and currently lives in New Hampshire with his wife, Melissa Hopper. He is concertmaster
of the Upper Valley Symphony Orchestra. He is the original JPB bass player; the addition of Don Mathews has allowed Marshall
to expand his string playing talents and add the mandolin to the JPB sound.
Don Mathews (Bass, Vocals): Don started playing bass in the sixth grade and has been playing the same Juzek bass since high
school. While classically trained - he currently plays in the Champlain Valley Philharmonic Orchestra - he enjoys playing all
types of music. This summer, besides holding down the JPB’s bottom end, you will also find him playing with his brother Rob in
‘The Storm Windows’, with Steve Donat in ‘The Dons’ and with Lauren Johnson in ‘Hey Neighbor!’
